Having studied at Leiden, in 1632 he joined the Dutch army and, in 1641, took part in the battle near Gennep. In 1645, he became Governor of Hulst but also made several diplomatic missions. In 1646 he married Countess Maria Magdalena van Limburg-Stirum and they became the parents of four children.
