Like his father he was both known as 'le Balafre' and fought fiercely against the Protestants. In 1569 he combatted them at Jarnac and Moncontour; and forced Gaspard de Coligny to raise the siege of Poitiers.
In 1572 he was one of the organisers of the 'St.Bartholomew's Massacre' and, in 1576, the head of the League against the Bourbons. His ambition was to become king of France but King Henri III, whom he hoped to succeed, arranged his murder at Blois.
