Duc de Rohan by marriage, he was born in 1616. A junior in the family,
he was poor but good-looking by the time's standards; and it was only natural
for him to choose a military career. Like his two brothers, he distinguished
himself. He assisted at the sieges of Hesdin in 1639, Arras in 1642, Thionville
in 1643, and Gravelines in 1644. The Dukedom of Rohan gave him the rank
of first baron of Brittany and president by inheritance from the nobility
to the counties of this province, he was appointed under oath before the
parliament of Rennes on 29 August 1653. He died at Chanteloup (today Arpajon)
on 27 February 1655; he was buried 6 March in the Church of Les Celestins
in Paris next to Admiral Philippe Chabot.
