Lady Elizabeth Noel, daughter of Wriothesley Baptist Noel,
2nd Earl of Gainsborough and Hon. Catherine Greville
Born 1688

Born in 1682 he was styled Viscount Woodstock. According to a contemporary
he was "a fine fellow but very affected." Together with his tutor he went
to the continent from 1701 until 1703. His marriage
to the daughter of the Earl of Gainsborough brought him the Titchfield
property.
He became a Whig M. P. for Southampton, 1705-1708, and for Hants, 1708-1709.
He was also Captain and Colonel of the 1st Troop of Life Guards. In 1709
he became the 2nd Earl of Portland and, on 6 July 1716, he was created
Marquess of Titchfield and Duke of Portland. He was Lord of the Bedchamber
from 1717 until his death.
Speculating in the South Sea Company, he lost a great deal and, for
the sake of the accompanying salary, was forced to accept the Governorship
of Jamaica, which he was until he died there at St. Iago
de la Vega. His body was taken to England and buried in Westminster
Abbey.
