Heinrich gathered the northern princes, together with the Teutonic knights, to meet the Mongols in battle at Liegnitz, 9 April 1241. Totally defeated, and his horse having dropped from exhaustion in the flight, Heinrich tried to escape running on foot hampered by his heavy armour, but the Mongol horsemen soon caught up with him and rode off in triumph with his severed head on a spear. His widow, Anne of Bohemia, only identified his headless, mangled, naked corpse because Heinrich had six toes on his left foot. Meanwhile, the victorious Mongols filled nine large sacks with a single ear from each of their slain opponents.
