Known as Lord Clinton till 1851, then Earl of Lincoln till 1864, in
which year he succeeded his father and became 6th Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne.
Meanwhile he was educated at Eton from 1846 till 1850 and matriculated
at Oxford, Christ Church, on 20 October 1852.
From 1857 till 1859 he was M.P. for Newark.
It is said that, while in Nice, he saw walking down the street
a beautiful girl whom he followed, determined to find out who she was.
She was Henrietta Adela Hope and they married on 11 February 1861 at the
British Embassy in Paris. However, there were people in England who thought
differently about the romance. "Lord Lincoln is to marry Miss Hope," wrote
a contemporary, "the daughter of ugly little Henry Hope with a big house
in Piccadilly. She is illegitimate, but pretty. Her mother is a French
woman. She will have all Hope's fortune, œ50,000 a year. It is a great
thing for the dukedom of Newcastle and will put it on its legs again."
However, amongst the inheritance was the notorious blue diamond---the Hope
diamond said to bring bad luck to whomever owned it. It was sold for œ120,000.
From their marriage five children were born. Then he died suddenly,
aged forty-five, at the Park Hotel, Park Place, St.James's.
