He was probably the third son of Malcolm Hamilton, Archbishop of
Cashel, and his first wife, Mary Wilkie. He entered the Swedish army
in 1624, to become a Colonel in 1641 and, having distinguished himself
in that service, was in 1654 created Baron Hamilton de Deserf in
Sweden. On his return to Ireland he was created, on 2 March 1661, Lord
Hamilton, Baron of Glenawly, and introduced by proxy to the House of
Lords on 11 June 1661. Later than 11 May 1659 he married twice but
had
children only by his second wife, Susanna Balfour. After he died in
April 1678, his widow married Henry Mervyn and died in Dublin on 11
December 1687.
