The fourth son of the 10th Earl of Wemyss and March, Hugo
Charteris succeeded his father as 11th Earl, in 1914, his three elder
brothers having all predeceased their father. He entered Parliament
as
Conservative Member of Haddintonshire in 1883; lost his seat in 1885;
but the following year was elected for Ipswich, which he held for
nearly ten years. In 1883 he married Mary Wyndham and they became the
parents of seven children. Two of their sons, Hugo and Ivo, were
killed in the Great War.
