Princess Irene von Hessen und bei Rhein (1866-1953)
daughter of Ludwig IV, Grand Duke von Hessen und bei Rhein 1877-1892 and
Princess Alice of Great Britain and Ireland
Born 11 July 1866 Darmstadt
Died 11 November 1953 Hemmelmark
Married 24 May 1888 Charlottenburg
Prince Heinrich of Prussia
Born 14 August 1862 Neues Palais, Potsdam
Died 20 April 1929 Hemmelmark

On the day of her christening the Austro-Prussian war formally ended and, because of this, she was named Irene (peace). Together with her two elder sisters they were described as 'The Three Graces'; but, unlike the others, her life was calm, happy and not touched by scandal. In 1888 she married her first cousin, Prince Heinrich of Prussia, and they lived a happy and harmonious life to the point that they were referred to as 'The Very Amiables'.
They became the parents of three sons but two suffered from haemophilia. Heinrich, their youngest son, died aged four but Waldemar survived until 1945. Their second son, Sigismund, was not affected but left Germany in 1922 to grow coffee in Guatamala. During the first World War she found herself on the opposing side to her sisters, Victoria, who was in England, and Ella and Alix who were in Russia.
In 1922 she visited 'Anna Anderson' in hospital and announced that she could not possibly be her niece, Grand Duchess Anastasia, but shortly before her death admitted to a friend that she 'might have made a mistake and that it probably was Anastasia'.
