He was Lord Lieutenant of Dumbartonshire from 1837 till 1844. On 4
June 1843 he married Jane Abercromby who, a month after the birth of
a
son, died 3 May 1844. On 18 December 1873, he drowned in Loch Lomond
within earshot of "Rossdhu", with five of his gillies. Everyone
thought the cries to be joyous boating cheers, while sailing homewards
from stalking red deer on the Island of Inchlonaig.
