Johann IV, Graf von Nassau-Dillenburg,
(1410-1475)
born 1 August 1410
died 3 February 1475 Dillenburg
married 7 February 1440
Maria van Heinsberg, Gravin van Loon
born 1424
died 20 April 1502
Born in Breda, he inherited his father's Dutch possessions while those
in Germany went to his younger brother, Heinrich II. As a general he served
two Dukes, Philippe The Good and Charles The Bold of Burgundy. In 1440
he married Maria, Countess of Loon; they became the parents of six children
and he fathered another two illegitimate sons.
When in 1445 Philippe The Good attacked the County of Holland, he was
accompanied by Johann IV of Nassau. In gratitude Philippe The Good appointed
him Senechal of Brabant. Johann IV of Nassau added the towers to the castle
of Breda where he also founded a large library.
However, when he died in Dillenburg, Germany, only his heart was interred
in the Pfarrkirche there while his body was returned to The Netherlands
for burial in a church in Breda.
