As he was a minor, his mother was made Regent in Friesland from 1696
till 1707. In 1702 he inherited most of the personal possessions of William
III, King of England and Scotland, as well as the titles of Prince of Orange,
Marquess of Vere and Vlissingen, Count of Buren and Leerdam, Baron of Breda.
He was already Prince of Nassau-Dietz, Count of Katzenelnbogen, and Vianden
en Spiegelberg. In 1708 he became as well Stadhouder of Groningen. He became
a general of the Infantry on 11 April 1704 and, in 1707, Captain-General
of Friesland. He fought in the battles of Oudenaarde (1708), Malplaquet
(1709) and Douai (1710). At the age of twenty four, he drowned while crossing
the Hollands Diep by ferry.
