Educated at Radley and Magdalen College, Oxford, he has been the Assistant Master at Oundle School. From 1939 till 1945 he served in the Second World War in North Africa, Sicily and Italy as a Major. He was mentioned in despatches and, in 1964, received an OBE (Civil).
