He was educated at Westminster School, 1739-1745; became a Tory M.P.
for Lyme Regis; was styled Lord Burghersh from 1762 until, in 1771, he
became the 9th Earl of Westmorland. Aged thirty, he married his first wife,
the Hon. Augusta Bertie, granddaughter of the 1st Duke of
Ancaster, but she died eight years later. After little over a year,
he married Lady Susan Gordon, daughter of the 3rd Duke of Gordon. He died
aged forty-five after only a few hours' illness.
