Chief Justice of Western Australia, he was a genial, humorous man whereas
his cousin, Colonel Montagu James, who after his death assumed the guardianship
of John's children, was the living embodiment of the peppery Anglo-Indian
Colonel of the 'nineties'. The children were brought up by three maiden
cousins, the Misses Hicks, who used Colonel
James as a bogey-man to frigthen the children whenever they were naughty.
