In 1929, he graduated from
Princeton and was active in management of
family interests as well
as art collecting. He supported numerous
civic and philantropic ventures,
such a Lincoln Center for the
Performing Arts, the Unityed
Negro College Fund, and the Population
Council.

In 1976 he was, as a Democrat,
elected governor of West Virginia;
reelected in 1980. He was
then elected to the U.S. Senate in 1984 and
reelected in 1990 and 1996.
