As Marquess of Blandford he served during World War I as Lieutenant in the 1st Life Guards, and in 1920 he married the Hon. Alexandra Cadogan, granddaughter of the 5th Earl Cadogan. He was Mayor of Woodstock from 1937 until 1942. During World War II he served again and also allowed Blenheim to be used by MI5 as well as a dormitory for evacuated children. In 1950 he opened Blenheim to the public and, in 1960, received œ50,000 from the Government as a contribution towards its restoration. His reaction to this necessity was: "I shut myself away behind the green railings in the east wing and on the whole life is liveable." As a widower he married Laura Charteris shortly before his death in 1972.
