He was only ten, when in 1732, his father lost his life in a hunting accident. On 5 May 1741 his mother died and from then on he managed his estates and manors. In the same year, on 22 August 1741, he
married Princess Therese of Liechtenstein, they became the parents of nine children. In 1746 the princely rank was extended to all his descendants. Around 1765, very much advanced for his time, he created a pension fund for his elder employees so they could retire without fear of poverty. In 1776 he was appointed Grand Master of Court of the Emperor and Empress, the highest rank in the Court. He died in Vienna on 17 February 1782. His wife had preceded him many years before as she had died on 19 January 1753.
