Joseph was a friend of Kant as well as being a well-known philosopher
and author himself. One of his essays, "Capital Punishment and Torture",
would be regarded as farsighted even today. He argued in all
his writings against the use of violence in any form. His relationship
with the population was excellent, especially after the heavy flooding
of the river Misa in 1784, when he gave a large sum of money and
quantity of timber to help the population recover. His second wife,
Princesse Leopoldine d'Arenberg, survived him by 10 years. She chose the
monastery of Heiligen, near Tachau, as her residence.
