After the death of his first wife, Prince William of Orange consorted with several low-class women which resulted in his only illegitimate son. Justinus grew up with his father's family and in 1565 is mentioned as one of his father's page boys. On 26 February 1576 he became a student in Leiden and, in 1578 lived again with his father. In the winter of 1581 he accompanied the French Duc d'Anjou on his journey to England where he tried to marry the English Queen Elizabeth. On 17 May 1583 he became a colonel in the infantry and, on 28 February 1585, Lieutenant-Admiral of Zeeland. In 1595 he went with two regiments to France from where he returned in 1596. On 4 December 1597 he married Anna van Merode, the widow of Thomas Morgan who had been Governor of Bergen-op-Zoom. In 1598 he accompanied Johan van Oldenbarnevelt on his diplomatic missions to France and England. In 1601 Justinus van Nassau became Governor of Breda which he remained until 1624 when this city was conquered by Ambrosio de Spinola. He lived his last years in Leiden where, on 8 October 1634, he died and was buried there.
