Archduke Karl of Austria (1540-1590)
Born 3 June 1540 Wien
Died 10 July 1590 Graz
married 26 August 1571
Marie, Princess of Bavaria
Born 21 March 1551
Died 29 April 1608
Archduke Charles, the younger brother of the Emperor Maximilian II,
was the Imperial candidate for the hand of Elizabeth I of England.
In 1566, Thomas Dannett, the English envoy to Vienna, sent home a glowing
report about the prospective bridegroom. The Archduke was courteous,
affable, wise, had a good memory, was popular, and liked vigorous outdoor
sports. A recent attack of smallpox had not disfigured him, as the
pockmarks were 'broad rather than deep'; he was 'of sanguine complexion,
and, for a man, beautiful and well-faced, well-shaped, small in the waist
and well and broad breasted; he seems in his clothes well thighed and well-legged'.
Elizabeth had no intention of marrying this paragon (or anyone else)
but she dragged the marriage negotiations out for years, until the Archduke
tired of them, and married his niece Maria of Bavaria.
