Duke Karl of Mecklenburg-Strelitz
(1708-1752)
born 23 February 1708 Strelitz
died 5 June 1752 Mirow
married 5 February 1735 Eisfeld
Princess Elisabeth Albertine of Saxe-Hildburghausen, Duchess of
Saxony
born 4 August 1713 Hildburghausen
died 29 June 1761 Neustrelitz
He was born at Strelitz
on 23 February 1708 but resided at Mirow where
he died aged forty-four
on 4 June 1752. In February 1735 he married
Elisabeth Albertine of Saxe-Hildburghausen,
by whom he became the
father of ten children.
Karl's elder half-brother, Adolf Friedrich
III, was the ruling Duke
of Mecklenburg-Strelitz who died childlessly
only six months after Karl.
This made Karl's third child the next
ruling Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz
as Adolf Friedrich IV. However, as
he was a minor, it was his
mother who acted on his behalf. Elisabeth
Albertine was regent until
only 1753 when her son finished his studies
and took control of the
Duchy himself. She died eight years later and,
less than two months after
her death, her daughter Charlotte Sophie
married King George III
of Great Britain.
