In May 1611 he left Holland as Commander of four ships and went to

and in 1615 Governor of the Molukken. In this capacity he resided on Ternate.
From 1616 he was Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies until, on 6
August 1619, he returned to Holland.
In 1626 he went to England as Ambassador to represent Holland at the
coronation of King Charles I. In 1628 he was sent to negotiate with the
Danish government but was shipwrecked on the coast of Jutland. He came
ashore but found himself in a territory occupied by Imperial forces, was
captured and taken to Vienna where he was kept
imprisoned for a year.
In 1630 he became one of Amsterdam's regents which he remained until
he died in 1637. In 1636 he became curator of 'the illustrious Latin Schools'.
