As he was born a younger son, he was the Hon. Leicester FitzGerald Charles
Stanhope from birth until 1851 when he succeeded his brother and became
5th Earl of Harrington.
In 1799 he entered the 1st Life Guards and became Deputy Adjutant General
in the East Indies 1815-1817, then Deputy Quarter Master General there
1817-1821. He served in the Mahratta War 1817-1818 and in 1837 became a
Colonel.
He was a strong Radical in early life, an adherent of Bentham and the
Utilitarian school, and also a prominent member of the Greek Committee
with Lord Byron.
On 23 April 1831 he married Elizabeth Williams Green, daughter and
heir of William Green of Jamaica, and they became the parents of four children.
He died in 1862 aged seventy-eight and his widow in 1898 aged eighty-seven.
