Because his father had died in 1748 when he was only seven, on 8 November 1752 he was adopted by his uncle Hendrik Carel van Nassau. In 1762 he inherited the property 'Ouwerkerk' from another uncle, Willem Hendrik van Nassau.
On 13 July 1767 in Utrecht, he married Jeanne Francoise Elisabeth Crousat, who died giving birth to a daughter. In Lausanne on 4 April 1768, he married Anne Pauline Marie de Chandieu-Villars and they became the parents of one son.
In 1773, he sold 'Ouwerkerk' to Floris van Nassau, yet another uncle, and, in 1777, bought 'Hoornenburg' on Texel. As well he joined the government of the town of Culemborg and later of Vianen. He made a name for himself as a patriotic writer and converted to Caholicism.
