Affaire with Louis XV, King of France 1715-1774, son of
Louis, Duc de Bourgogne and Princess Marie Adelaide de
Savoie
Born 15 February 1710 Versailles
Died 10 May 1774 Versailles
She was only fifteen when she married her father's first cousin, Louis
Alexandre, Comte de Mailly, who was twice her age. In 1738 the French queen,
tired of having given birth to eleven children, withdrew from the king
and by 1739 Louise Julie, Madame de Mailly, had become his mistress.
Louise Julie was neither pretty nor clever, but she was vivacious, amusing
and kind, and she genuinely loved the king. However, she made one fatal
mistake: she included her avaricious sister, Madame de Vintimille, in her
intimate supper parties with the king, and then found herself replaced
by her in the king's affections.
However, her sister died in 1741, having given birth to a royal bastard.
The king was grief-stricken and Madame de Mailly made an effort to console
him, in the vain hope that he would take her back,
and even adopted her sister's son. However, the king then took yet
another sister, Madame de Tournelle, as his mistress.
