She came from a good family but had already been living with
another man. To give herself some status she called herself Mrs.
Barlow. John Evelyn, the diarist, described her as "this beautiful
strumpet---a brown, beautiful, bold, but insipid creature." According
to John Evelyn, the son she bore in 1649 was too good-looking to be
Charles II's, but Charles II acknowledged the baby without hesitation.
He gave much love to the child but later was to be repaid with
trouble.
When Charles II left temporarily, she gave her favours to others;
and when Charles II found out he left her. Her second child was
fathered by Henry Bennet who later became both Earl of Arlington and
one of Charles II's ministers. Lucy Walter died a few years later and
Charles II took possession of their son.
