Born in 1565, he married on 8 June 1589 Anna Maria von Hessen-Kassel and they became the parents of fourteen children. In 1602 he inherited Saarbruecken from his uncle, Philipp IV. And when in 1605 the families branch in Wiesbaden became extinct, he also inherited Wiesbaden and Idstein. From 1602 he lived with his family at Saarbruecken. In 1623 he 
reorganised the monetary system in his territories. Anna Maria died 8 November 1626 and was buried at St. Arnoul; and when Ludwig II died, 8 November 1627, he too was buried there.
