In 1294 he followed his father as Duke of Bavaria, but with his brother Rudolf and his mother acting as his regents. On 20 October 1314 he was elected as King of the Romans (Emperor Elect) and crowned as Emperor, first in Aachen on 25 November 1314 then again in Rome on 17 January 1328. On 20 December 1340 he inherited Lower-Bavaria. He
died while hunting bears at Fuerstenfeld near Munich.
