Princess Luise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Duchess of Saxony, (1800-1831)
Born 21 December 1800 Gotha
Died 30 August 1831 Paris
Married 13 July 1817 Gotha Div.1826
Ernst I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha 1826-1844
Born 2 January 1784 Coburg
Died 29 January 1844 Gotha

Not yet seventeen years old, she married the nearly seventeen-year
older Ernst I, Duke of Saxe-Saalfeld. Luise has been described as
"elegant, attractive, with fair locks and blue eyes, natural and
amiable". She was dearly loved by her two sons and the people of her
husband's Duchy. When, in 1824 and after only seven years of marriage,
she wanted to separate from her husband, the people of Saalfeld
dragged back her carriage and re-united her with her husband and
children. However, this did not last and Luise left, saying "Parting
from my children was the worst thing of all". In 1826 they divorced
and in the same year she married Freiherr Alexander von Hanstein, whom
she had known for over two years. However, she lived only another four
years before dying, according to Queen Victoria, of a "sad and painful
          illness".
