Princess Maria Belgica of Portugal
(1599-1647)
Born June 1599
Died 28 July 1647 Geneve, Switzerland
Buried Cathedral, Geneve
Married June 1629 (eloped)
Jean Theodore Croll
Died circa 1640 Venice (murdered)
In 1626 she left The Netherlands with her mother and sisters to live
in Geneva. In 1629 a marriage was arranged for her with a Markgrave of
Baden; however, on the night before the marriage she
eloped with a colonel in the service of this Markgrave, married and
produced six children.
Unfortunately her husband Jean Theodore Croll proved an irresponsible
adventurer and so they separated. Meanwhile, in 1630 after her mother's
death, her sisters returned to The Netherlands so
that, after her separation, Maria Belgica was left alone with her children
when she chose to remain in Switzerland.
In 1643 her husband was murdered in Venice and Maria Belgica died in
Geneva on 28 July 1647. Because of the scandal she had caused with her
elopement, her sisters remained unmarried with the exception of Eleonora
Mauritia who, at the age of thirty-six, married a cousin.
