MARIA, ARCHDUCHESS OF AUSTRIA+INFANTA OF SPAIN (1528-1603)
Born: 21 JUN 1528  Madrid, Royal Alcazar, SPAIN
Died: 26 FEB 1602/03  Madrid, SPAIN
Married: 3 SEP 1548,   Villadolid
Maximilian II, Holy Roman Emperor
Born: 31 JUL 1527  Vienna, AUSTRIA
Died: 12 OCT 1576  Regensburg, GERMANY

Daughter of the Emperor Charles V and Isabella of Portugal;

Maximilan II's tolerance for Protestantism was counterbalanced by his wife, and cousin, Maria, who was a bigoted Catholic. (When she returned to Spain as a widow, her first words were to express delight at being back in a country without heretics!)  Since she  had charge of the education of their children, she made sure that they took after her, not their father.

Their children were Anna (1549-80) who married Philip II of Spain; Ferdinand (1551-52); Emperor Rudolf II (1552-1612); Ernst (1553-95) Regent of the Austrian Netherlands; Elizabeth (1554-92) who married Charles IX of France; Emperor Matthias (1557-1619); Albert (1559-1621), who married Infanta Isabella Clara Eugenia of Spain.  As 'The Archdukes', they ruled what is now Belgium; Wenceslas (1560-77); Margarethe (1567-1633).
