Marie *The Rich*, Heiress of
Bourgogne (1457-1482)

Died: 27 MAR 1482 Brugge
Married: 19 AUG 1477, Gent
Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor
Born: 22 MAR 1458/59 Vienna-Neustadt, Austria
Died: 12 JAN 1518/19 Wels
The marriage of Mary, heiress of the Duchy of Burgundy,
and Archduke Maximilian [Habsburg] (1459-1519), the future Holy Roman Emperor,
brought enormous wealth
and prestige into the family. The fact that the two young people
( he was 18, she was 19) fell in love was a bonus.
When Maximilian arrived for the wedding, he
spoke only German. As Mary spoke only French and Flemish, conversation
had to be carried on through interpreters, which was awkward. Someone
in the bride's party, however, had thought up a great way to break the
ice: he told the Archduke that the Duchess had a flower hidden on
her person, and that he should search her until he found it. Maximilian
started searching, carefully, 'with two fingers'. Finally someone
told him to unlace her bodice! There, between her breasts, was a clove
pink - the symbol of married love.
The marriage was very successful, on the personal
level, once they had learned each other's languages - "If we had peace,
we should be living in a garden of roses." Maximilian wrote, and was blessed
with two children: Philippe Le Bel (1478-1506) and Margaret of Austria
(1480-1530).
In 1482, Mary, who was pregnant again, went hunting.
Her horse fell, smashing her against a tree, and causing mortal injuries.
She died a few days later. She was just twenty-five years old.
