Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, Madame
de Sevigne, (1626-1696)
daughter of Celse-Benigne de Rabutin, Baron de Chantal
Born 1626 Paris
Died 1696 Grignan
Married 1644
Henri, Marquis de Sevigne
|
As a young girl, after being orphaned she was carefully brought up
by an uncle, the Abbe de Coulanges. In 1644 she married the dissolute Henri,
Marquis de Sevigne, and they became the parents of two children. In 1651
her husband was killed in a duel, and from then
onwards her thoughts were centred on her children.
After the marriage of her daughter in 1669, Madame de Sevigne began
a series of letters, lasting over twenty-five years, recounting the inner
history of her time in great detail, and in a natural, colloquial style.
These letters were published posthumously.
She died at Grignan of smallpox, after nursing her daughter through
an illness.
