Her father, Thomas Boleyn, could afford to be come a courtier and had
made a grand marriage when he married (Lady) Elizabeth Howard, daughter
of a future Duke of Norfolk. Three children had been born, Mary, Anne and
George. There had been a scandal about Lady Elizabeth Boleyn and her extra-marital
activities.
Thomas Boleyn had sent Mary first to Brussels at the Court of Margaret
of Austria, the ruler of The Netherlands, and later to the French Court
where it was rumoured that Mary Boleyn had been the mistress of the French
king, Francois I. After this Mary returned to the English Court.
Henry VIII had had a mistress, Elizabeth Blount, one of Queen Katherine's
waiting women; and in 1519 Bessie Blount had borne a son. Then Henry VIII
took Mary Boleyn as his mistress. However, this did not last for very long
and Mary married William Carey, a man of moderate means and a fairly undistinguished
member of the king's household.
Mary Boleyn and William Carey became the parents of several children
and, when William Carey died, she remarried Sir William Stafford. When
Mary Boleyn died she was probably about thirty-eight years or so old.
