Mary of Scotland (1452-1488)
born before 16 May 1452
died May 1488
married April 1474
Sir James Hamilton
1st Baron Hamilton, 6th of Cadzow
born circa 1415
died 16 November 1479
This unfortunate princess had been happily married to Thomas, Master
of Boyd, "the most courteous, gentlest, wisest, kindest, most bounteous
knight" and "fairest archer, devoutest, most perfect, and truest to his
lady". The King made him Earl of Arran, giving them the island of Arran
for her dowry. But his father, the Regent Boyd, suddenly fell from power
in 1469 and the family fled into exile in Burgundy.
After her beloved husband's death, the princess returned to Scotland
where the king gave her hand in marriage to Lord Hamilton, then an elderly
widower. In 1484, after the murder by the Montgomeries of the young 2nd
Lord Boyd, her son by her first marriage, her heir became James, 2nd Lord
Hamilton, the son on her second marriage. This was of immense importance
to Scottish history, as throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries
the Hamilton chiefs were often the nearest heirs presumptive to the throne.
