In 1160 he married Marie de Blois and in her right became Count of Boulogne.
However, before her marriage she had been Abbess of Romsey when she succeeded
her brother as Countess of Boulogne, and this was the reason when the marriage
was annulled in 1169 and she returned to
a convent in Saint-Austrebert. There she died on 25 July 1182. Shortly
after the annulment, Matthieu, still Count of Boulogne, married Eleonore
de Vermandois.
