Maximilian II, Holy Roman Emperor
Born: 31 JUL 1527 Vienna, AUSTRIA
Died: 12 OCT 1576 Regensburg, GERMANY
Married: 13 SEP 1548, Villadolid
Maria, Archduchess von Austria+Infanta of Spain
Born: 21 JUN 1528 Madrid, Royal Alcazar, SPAIN
Died: 26 FEB 1602/03 Madrid, SPAIN
Eldest son of Ferdinand I and Anna (Jagellon) of Hungary; husband of
Maria of Spain.
As a young man, Maximilian found much to admire in Protestantism; so
much so that his father feared that he might actually turn Protestant,
and threatened to disinherit him unless he swore a solemn oath to live
and die a Catholic.
During his reign, Maximilian managed to avoid wars, which gave his
vast dominions a chance to prosper. Because of this, and of his tolerance,
he was very popular among all of his subjects: Catholics, Protestants,
Austrians, Hungarians, Bohemians - everyone liked him. (This made
him unique among Holy Roman Emperors!)
When Maximilan was dying, he refused to call for a priest or to receive
the last rites. His wife, one of his sisters, the Papal nuncio and
the Spanish ambassador all 'reasoned' with him, but he was adamant:
his priest, he said, was in Heaven.
