Duke Max would give his illegitimate children the same gay, casual
affection which he bestowed on his horses and his legitimate children.
He loved his native mountains and the warm-hearted country people. However,
he never forgot that he was a Wittelsbach, free to enjoy the privileges
of his position and to disregard his responsibilities. He was bored when
he was invited to the King of Bavaria's court, yet was delighted when by
royal command one of his own heroic dramas were performed at the Residenztheater.
