During the defence of Hungary against the invading Turks, Count Zrinski (Zrinyi) became a hero but lost his life. Besieged in Szigetvar by Suleiman the Magnificent, he ordered the lowering of the drawbridge in belief that he was attacking Suleiman himself, in a desperate attempt to stop the Turks. He did not know, nor did many of the Turks, that Suleiman was already dead, though still a presence in his tent as the grand-vizier had embalmed him, as otherwise the morale of the Turks would be destroyed. Count Zrinski met his death in this
attack and the new Sultan, Selim, sent to the Emperor in Vienna a present: Count Zrinski's decapitated and pickled head with his fur cap still attached to his skill by a Turkish arrow.
