Onno Zwier van Haren was a wellknown and beloved poet and wrote a play.
He was also one of the most prominent people of Friesland, as he was 'grietman'
(mayor) of Stellingwerf-Westeinde and a deputy for Friesland in the Dutch
parliament Staten-Generaal).
However, rumour had it that he had interfered with two of his daughters,
even at the time when Carolina had become engaged to Willem van Hogendorp.
At first the family tried to ignore the rumours, but soon the gossip reached
all levels of society and went as far as
Brussels and Paris. Unexpectedly, Onno Zwier admitted the accusations
but then withdrew, maintaining he had been forced to confess by his sons-in-law,
as they wanted to replace him in his profitable offices.
Carolina and Willem van Hogendorp married and, on the day their second
child was born, the Court of Friesland pronounced a verdict, but which
was worded so vaguely that it was not established whether Onno Zwier was
guilty or not. All contact with Caroline and her family ceased for the
rest of his life.
