As a young girl she was known as Mademoiselle de Nesle until, in 1739,
she married the Marquis de Vintimille, from when she was known as Madame
de Vintimille. By 1739 her elder sister, Madame de Mailly, had become the
mistress of King Louis XV.
Madame de Vintimille was no prettier than her sister, but was avaricious,
ambitious and much bolder; and when her sister introduced her to the king,
she replaced her and became the king's mistress in turn. The king, tired
of flattery, was amused by her frank speech and independent manner, and
so installed her at Choisy. However, here she soon died after giving birth
to the king's son. Named Comte de Luc, the boy grew up to be the image
of his father and was always known as the 'demi-Louis'.
