Mecklenburg-Schwerin 1837-1842, (1800-1842)
Born 15 September 1800 Ludwigslust
Died 7 March 1842 Schwerin

Born 23 February 1803 Berlin

He was educated
at Geneve from 1814 until 1818, after which he went to
the Universities
of Jena and Rostock. In 1819 his father died, which
made him heir
to his grandfather, and in 1837 he became Grand Duke.
The first thing
he did was to change the residence from Ludwigslust to
Schwerin. He
improved the judicial system and in 1849 he opened an
institute for
the deaf and dumb. He improved roads and connected
Mecklenburg
to the railway system, opening up his country for trade.
However, he
died young after rushing to a fire at Schwerin where he
caught a cold
and his death.
