Philippa had been considered for Edward III of England when she was
only eight years old. When Edward III and his mother were told to leave
France in 1326, they visited Philippa's parents and they had the chance
to meet. Papal dispensation was obtained in September 1327, and, on 24
January 1328 at York Minster, Philippa married King Edward III of England
In 1330 Philippa gave birth to the first of their twelve children.
As they had a happy marriage, Philippa was able to control her husband's
violent temper. She pleaded successfully for the lives of the six burghers
of Calais when the town surrendered to Edward III.
As she was kind in a motherly fashion, she became more popular than
any of her predecessors. After suffering for about two years of "a dropsical
malady" she died aged fifty-eight.
