At the age of seven he succeeded his father with his mother as regent
until, in 1626, he was declared to be of age. In 1627 he married Sibylla
Christina of Anhalt-Dessau and they became the parents of five children.
In 1630 he was forced to accept the occupation of Hanau by the Imperial
forces. When he died in 1638, aged almost thirty-three, the was survived
by only one child, Philipp Ludwig III, who died three years later only
nine-years old.
