Pope Leo XI 1605 (1535-1605)

Died 27 April 1605 Roma
As ambassador of Grand Duke
Cosimo I in Rome, he became a disciple of
Philip Neri and in 1573
was made bishop of Pistoia, then archbishop of
Florence, and in 1583 cardinal.
He had assisted in the reconciliation
of Henri of Navarre with
Rome, remaining two years in France from
1596. His candidacy was
strongly opposed by Spain, but supported by
France. On 1 April 1605
he was elected pope but on 27 April 1605 he
died.
