Pope Leo XI 1605  (1535-1605)
Alessandro de' Medici-Ottaiano
Born 2 June 1535 Firenze
Died 27 April 1605 Roma

As ambassador of Grand Duke Cosimo I in Rome, he became a disciple of
Philip Neri and in 1573 was made bishop of Pistoia, then archbishop of
Florence, and in 1583 cardinal. He had assisted in the reconciliation
of Henri of Navarre with Rome, remaining two years in France from
1596. His candidacy was strongly opposed by Spain, but supported by
France. On 1 April 1605 he was elected pope but on 27 April 1605 he
        died.
