He was styled Viscount Lumley until, in 1752, he succeeded his father
to become 4th Earl of Scarbrough. Educated at Eton, he took his seat in
the House of Lords on 25 March 1752. In 1756 he became Cofferer of the
Household and again from 12 July 1765 until 1766. From October 1765 until
September 1777 he was Deputy Earl Marshal and, in April 1782, became Joint
Vice-Treasurer. He was a Whig in politics. On 26 December 1752 he married
Barbara Savile and they became the parents of eleven children.
