Sir Richard Wallace (1818-1890)
Born 21 June 1818 London
Died 20 July 1890 Paris
Married 5 February 1871 Paris
Julie Amelie Charlotte Castlenau, daughter of Bernard
Castlenau and Sophie Elisabeth Knoth
There has been confusion about the parentage of Sir Richard Wallace
but this was cleared up by the will of the 4th Marquess of Hertford. As
a wild and reckless youth, the Marquess had been
entangled with a much older woman, Mrs. Agnes Jackson, nee Wallace,
who had given birth to Richard Jackson in 1818 when the Marquess was only
eighteen years old. It was the Marquess's mother who brought up Richard
Jackson who later changed his name to Richard Wallace.
He became an art-collector and philanthropist. His father, also an art-collector,
used Sir Richard Wallace as his agent when buying art and, when the Marquess
died, bequeathed many paintings and objet d'Art to him. Sir Richard died
in 1890 and in 1897 his widow donated a house with all contents to the
nation. This is now known as the Wallace Collection.
