In 1784 he became an M.P. and in 1786 Lord of the Treasury. For
several years he lived together with Hyacinthe Gabrielle Roland and, after
several children were born, married her in 1794. In 1797 he
became Governor-General of India, which he remained until 1805, and
in 1799 he was made a Marquess. Under his administration British rule in
India became supreme, the influence of France was extinguished, and the
power of the princes reduced by the crushing of Tippoo Sahib in 1799 and
the Marathas in 1803. After his return to England, he became ambassador
to Madrid in 1805 and foreign minister in 1809.
On 7 December 1816 his wife died and, on 29 October 1825, he married
Marianne Caton, widow of Robert Patterson, whose sister Elizabeth Patterson
had been married to a brother of Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1821 he was appointed
Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland and again in 1833.
