As secretary to H.M. The Queen, he is in a very difficult position; his wife is a sister of the Princess of Wales and at the same time he is a first cousin of Ronald Ferguson, father of the Duchess of York. 
As can only happen in families, Sir Robert and Ronald Ferguson despise each other. Ronald Ferguson regards Sir Robert as "the enemy in the camp", while Sarah, the Duchess of York, refers to him, for obvious reasons, as Sir Robert "Bellows".
